Denmark's gateway to Europe

South Jutland - Denmark's gateway

Denmark's gateway to Europe
SouthJutland links Denmark with continental Europe and close friendly relations with Germany are a feature of this cross-border region. With the flat western coast of the Wadden Sea, dykes and marshland, it constitutes the most southern part of Denmark with its very own characteristics.

Denmark's largest national park
Denmark's largest national park, Wadden Sea National Park, covers the four municipalities of the Wadden Sea in southwestern Jutland. The National Park offers a distinctive natural environment with a rich animal and bird life. In the marshes, the tides that come in twice a day, shift 1,000,000,000 m3 of water back and forth through the depths. The area is visited by more than 10 million staging waterbirds on migration. The Wadden Sea Centre in Vester Vedsted arranges guided tours with themes such as oyster hunting, black sun, hiking Mandø, geasetrips, seal safari and much more.

The Jutland coffee table
Jutland is the region of tradition and history. If you are lucky enough to be invited to a Southern Jutland coffee party, you must prepare yourself to loosen your belt. For a true high coffee party of Southern Jutland consists of at least 16 different kinds of cakes, and it is a direct insult to the hostess not to taste each delicacy. The cakes are a variety of small masterpieces such as Broken cookies, Southern Jutland breadpies, brown fat cakes, vrejn pups and striffkache. At several local inns as Kommandørgården on Rømø or Trøjborg in Bredebro you can still experience a true coffee table of Southern Jutland.

Border Country
SouthJutland is also border country and Denmark's gateway to Europe. This area from Kongeåen in the north to the now almost invisible Danish-German border is still the district, where community singing and Danish identity is paramount. Here you can still find houses, where the windows are facing away from the road, so you, in the past, could gather without being watched. But it is also a place where Danes, Germans and a lot of Frisian minorities are living on both sides of the border, and the vast majority speak fluent Danish and German. And any dispute is stilled over a good chat and a Pharisee, which in Southern Jutland is a coffee punch. Put a coin in the cup and dilute the coffee with schnapps until the coin reappears.
